The Kynaston Studd Lodge has its origins in the Polytechnic, Regent Street. This institution had a considerable sporting and social side in addition to its academic activities. A number of members, staff and the governing body were also freemasons.

This resulted in the formation of several lodges associated with the Polytechnic. The Polytechnic Lodge No 2847 was consecrated in 1901. This was followed by the Robert Mitchell Lodge No 2956 (consecrated 1903), and the Old Quintinians Lodge No 3307 (consecrated 1908). These lodges steadily grew in size with the result that initiates were waiting many years before reaching office. The consequence of this was the formation of the Kynaston Studd Lodge No 5416 in 1933 and later, the Langham Lodge No 6886 in 1949. This enabled members to join a new and smaller lodge and enter office sooner. In fact, Kynaston Studd Lodge was sponsored, not by the Polytechnic Lodge, but by Athlon Lodge No 4674, there being some doubt as to whether the Polytechnic Lodge would be enthusiastic in sponsoring a new Lodge.

However, the connection with our sister Polytechnic Lodges has remained strong throughout.

Our Lodge takes its name from John Edward Kynaston Studd Bt, OBE, LLD, PGW who was for many years President of the Polytechnic. This was a notable concession by Grand Lodge which did not as a rule agree with the naming of a lodge after living masons – however eminent. The Lodge coat of arms and motto “Nous tenons le droit” are those of the Studd family.
